That’s why it’s super important to make sure that your website is optimized for page speed there are plenty of tools out there that tell you what to do and what the problem is but unfortunately a lot of developers are just stuck in this churn and burn type of methodology of building websites.

Generally, what they do is they go out to a tool like WordPress themes or one that’s very typical is also seen ThemeForest and they buy those website themes which are built-in with all of these additional features that the average business site doesn’t really need at all.

I highly recommend you look at hiring someone to manage your technical SEO and crawl your website frequently to see what errors are out there and fix them.

If you have a website developer you should have some type of maintenance plan they should be updating your plugins and correcting any errors.

But, if you’re not actively looking at SEO and how your website is either bring you down or pushing you forward you are missing a huge opportunity for search engine optimization and overall digital marketing improvements!

Woah, this past weekend (April 22, 2022) – The EU announced their decision to approve the updated Digital Services Act (DSA) which will force tech giants to reveal the way their products work and track online behavior.

To the common man, this is a great step towards transparency and trust in the world of the three ws.

I’ve worked in this industry for nearly a decade now. The amount of times I’ve had to ask a client where their online analytics are housed — and the reply is “idk” makes my heart ache. There are far too many slimy salesmen who have oversold a product or service which is not fully ironed out yet.

Does Voice Speak Listen to What We Mean or What We Say?

For many, voice search is a new phenomenon. Others have known about this *explicit language warning* YouTube video that my family endlessly cracks up about– and others like it for years.

Decades even. Yep, voice search has been around for a decade. The initial launch was in May 2012. Seems like eons ago. We laughed and laughed at the thought of talking out loud at a machine for information.

Search Engine Marketers without a real plan urged clients to “START OPTIMIZING YOUR SITE FOR VOICE SEARCH NOW” because it was going to be a booming industry. But it wasn’t until Amazon introduced our beloved Alexa in 2015 did America fall in love with voice search capabilities. We fell so hard; we started naming our kids after her.

The voice search technology relies on the voice of the user to make requests for information or products, while artificial intelligence determines what needs to be searched based on the content of the question posed. Why Your Podcast Isn’t Gaining Listeners (and how to turn it around)


The reason why you aren’t getting a lot of traffic on your website / podcast is because you haven’t put enough work into it….YET.


It’s not under my scrutiny – it’s under Google’s. And with podcasts – your search engines are the platforms that you list your show. Audible, Apple Podcasts, Google podcasts, etc.

If you’ve just started out….you’re seen as a new entity – and there isn’t enough authority – well, there’s zero authority ratings telling search engines that you’re worth ranking for these topics.

I know it sounds harsh, but I promise- as soon as you understand where you’re ranking currently and how you’re viewed in Google’s eyes -then you get your chance to grow.

So let’s start building!

Here are some suggestions for how to grow your podcast’s audience with search engine optimization:

Do your research! Look up other Podcasts.

Unless you’re coming to the podcast market with some seriously FRESH ideas. Chances are, you are probably reiterating content that has already been created. If there’s a podcast with your same messaging and objective, make sure you study their moves – not to steal their ideas -but to improve upon them and offer better content for your listeners.

Build your Podcast’s Website + Develop Domain Authority

A domain‘s authority + backlinks tells search engines how “popular” you are – yeah, talk about a high school throwback- you gotta worry about how popular you are in other people’s …well, website crawler’s eyes, sorry ’bout it.

Building authority and acquiring backlinks is one of the largest reasons why the general public believe SEO to be so robust/confusing/obscure/etc. There are so many factors that need to be considered when growing your domain’s authority.

It’s not a race to the most links, it’s a dance concerning placement, context, who you’re dancing with, etc. etc. etc. It also takes a long time, or if you’re going against Google’s very specific rules to not purchase links not as long BUUUUT- you could be handed a manual action for obviously purchasing links. It’s Google’s game and we’re just playing it.

TL;DR – take the time to build your authority by acquiring links from a variety of other similar websites. Keep producing content – I know this is the most annoying suggestion. Because you’re like KEEP CALM AND KEEP ON?

That’s like going to the doctor when you clearly need antibiotics but they’re like naw fam you’re good – and they tell you to drink fluids and rest.

But alas, it’s true.

You gotta keep producing content that GIVES. Generous content is the hardest part for most to accept because why buy the milk when you can get the cow for free — BUT that’s where we develop a sales process that drives from the website/podcast traffic. Your advice is your service – yes – but getting the PREMIUM advice (whether it be in patreon content, coaching, lessons, courses, etc….) is where we monetize.

For now, we just keep shoving RELEVANT, INTERESTING, UNIQUE and GENEROUS content down the search engine’s throat.

Make your content accessible / Fix Technical SEO issues

This is hard to come to terms with, as the podcast host and the business owner as well. There’s a plethora of “built for you” websites that sell their users on the concept that their platform is build for every industry and there’s this really easy plug and play template for you to use – NO CODING INVOLVED, WOO.

and that’s how they get ya.

The way that they’re able to make it so accessible to non-coders – is exactly what makes it a bad resource for a SEO-friendly website.

Code bloat- think of it this way – SEO means efficiency. The smaller amount of coding on a site to get the job done, the faster the servers can produce the content on the frontend = better user experience.

Better user experience = higher rankings on search engines.

The higher you rank on search engines, the more expansive your podcast’s reach will be. Promise.

Claim Your Free Money From Google


Google Ads is giving away money and for once, I don’t have to laugh when I utter those words.

Real talk – back in like, ehhhh 2015 when Google Ads – formerly, “Google Adwords” – was really getting ramped up and my digital advertising clients we’re PSYCHED! There seemed to be all of these fancy tools out there to way your wildest bidding strategy dreams come true.

I had a colleague mention that his client’s buddy said he could get him “like 200 bucks” in free ad spend from Google if he spent up to a certain dollar.

I laughed. There’s no way in h -e- double-hockey- sticks the GOOG is giving away money!

They’re busy swatting away fraudulent clicks and other privacy concerns of the early 2010’s. Mind you, this is circa 2017 when Google’s stock was as low as $950. As of May 2022 – it’s up to $2,200+. So take that for what you will.

My point is, Google was young, and so were we.

Google Ad Promotions were NEW

I’ll tell ya, for being in marketing – there are too many times I have been TRIGGERED by perfect marketing messaging. Brilliant promotional strategy sincerely rocks my socks. I watch the “FOOTBALL GAME” every February for the ads. You know who I am, I am that girl that’s #HereForTheSnacks!

But I truthfully didn’t see what they were doing. They were offering small promotions to BIG spenders – so they’d get the warm fuzzies and say;

“awwwwwwwwwww Google cares about my business so much – they’re willing to give me money to get started advertising! “

-unaware business owner looking to get into search engine marketing

BUT! They’re sneaky. These promotion dollars encourage you to spend your hard earned money on the potential of being visible on their search engine platform. So customers can find you online.

and then they hook you with the line that ‘automated bidding strategies are more likely to improve your performance due to machine learning’.

If you’re an experienced digital marketer, then you know that’s code for

“make it complicated so they won’t ask questions”.


If Google is handing you money, it’s because they expect to make at least double of it back. Remember – they’re running a business, first.

Automated Bidding Strategies Go As Far Back As 2015

Yes, I’m serious. The robots have been working against us for longer than we’ve known and our jobs are to just keep up with them. I’m literally sweating.

That said – Google has been coming for my job ever since Google invented it. And quite frankly I’m over it. These automated bidding strategies trick business owners into believing that running a successful paid search strategy is as easy as 1,2,3. Well, Google says it is – so it must be!

These automated bidding strategies + smart campaign offerings frequently leave out the key factor in marketing — it must be unique to your business.

Just because someone has figured out how to make a competitor $100s of $1,000s or bajillions of dolloars – doesn’t mean it’s going to work for your company.

Because you’re different and your digital marketing strategy should be, too.

Avoid Giving Your Cash Back To Google Without an ROI

So, Google’s promotion says;

  • Terms and conditions for this offer: Offer available only while supplies last.
  • Offer available only to advertisers which are new to Google Ads, with a billing address in the United States. One promotional code per advertiser.
  • The promotional code must be applied to your first Google Ads account within 14 days of your first ad impression being served from such account.
  • To earn the credit: After the promotional code is applied to your Google Ads account, your advertising campaigns must accrue costs of at least $500, (excluding any taxes or applicable fees), within 60 days. Making a payment of $500 is not sufficient. The tracking of advertising costs towards $500 begins after the promotional code is applied.
  • Once 3 and 4 are completed, the credit will typically be applied within 5 days to the Billing Summary of your Google Ads account.
  • The credit expires 60 days after it is applied to your account.
    Credit applies to future advertising costs only. Credit cannot be applied to costs accrued before the promotional code was entered in your Google Ads account.
  • You won’t receive a notification once credit in your Google Ads account is used up and any additional advertising costs will be charged to your form of payment. If you don’t want to continue advertising, you can pause or delete your campaigns at any time.
  • Your account must be successfully billed by Google Ads and remain in good standing in order to remain eligible to use the credit.

Smart Campaigns vs. Search Campaigns: What’s Smarter? Better? Faster?


Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is a tricky digital marketing tactic that many believe to be a ‘quick win’ to drive traffic to your website or get online lead generation started. While mostly true, the statement leads most business owners to believe that running a paid search campaign is easy and… quick.

Why You Shouldn’t DIY Your Google Ads Campaign

What can be problematic about simply throwing keywords and ad copy together is that many Google Ads beginners do not quite understand the depth of the platform’s capabilities, so even if you’re running a basic campaign – you are hurting yourself by throwing things together without taking your available opportunities into consideration.

Google – is a business. Many operators forget this. Businesses need to make money to function. Google makes money by users using their product, aka being on it longer. So if they offer “smart campaigns” for operators to “easily” start up a “quick” campaign, you have to stop and question — what are they getting out of this?

Remember – you can have quick, easy, and good – but not all at once.

If you’re tinkering with a platform you don’t understand how to use – you’re going to spend more time on it. As a business owner, what do you have the least of? TIME.

So business owners often opt for the quickest option to “get it done” – and it’s frequently not the best choice. BUT nobody wants to pay someone to do something that they believe they can do themselves.

And here’s the thing – digital marketing is not rocket science. (Why do we keep using that term?) – but it’s very technical, always evolving and you have to pay attention to it, all the time.


And again, what do you not have? TIME.

However, I can appreciate the DIY perspective of the entrepreneurial spirit, alas – here I am – DIYing my own digital marketing agency after years as a specialist. I knew I could “just do it” myself.

But, I have the tenacity and I’m deeply engrained in the digital marketing network of resources and have spent years educating myself. *That’s right – self taught here.* I’ve spent a lot of time learning this.

Smart Campaigns vs. Search Campaigns : The Comparison

If you’re like me – you skimmed that table and rolled your eyes. K. But what does it MEAN?

Short and sweet; it means you have far more flexibility by strategically building a well thought out paid search campaign by not buying into the smart campaign aesthetic. A smart campaign will get you clicks to your website. I promise you that.

But then what? Have you thought about the user’s experience afterward? Your hope is that they search “your company’s service” “near me” and choose you – and convert.


My dear, it is never that simple. I wish. Trust me, I wish it was. It’s also important to consider the quality of those clicks. Are they tangible interested bodies? Or are they browsers? Are they bots?

Are they just clicking any link that pops up first because their time is so precious they didn’t have a second to read that they accidentally searched for pork rub and clicked the first link to your STL style BBQ meat seasoning and sauce store versus the online hub of expressions of love that they thought they were getting themselves into..? I digress.

Yeah, you’ll get clicks. And you’ll pay for them.

TL;DR – skip the smart campaigns. Hire a paid search expert.
